Once again, congratulations goes out to Hannah. Below is a small writing about her. "Since education and knowledge are the ultimate tools to success, I knew that going to a prestigious university would help me to attain such knowledge and provide me with the opportunities to achieve my dreams. I am currently a first year at UCLA hoping to pursue a double major in Communication Studies and Sociology--these areas of study fascinate me, because I am interested in how different types of people and groups interact/communicate, as well as the powerful influence of the mass media on society and its ability to affect different aspects in people's lives. I aspire to someday have a career in either broadcast or print journalism, so that I, too, will have the opportunity to touch, inform, educate, and connect with people on a broader level through the use of mass comunication. Now that I am here at UCLA, a school rife with knowledge and opportunities, my primary concern was no longer just about maintaining a strong academic stature, but mainly, a financial one--constantly seeking financial opportunities to assist me in paying for all my college expenses. Unlike many students who rely on federal aid and loans to help them pay for majority of their schooling, a person of my circumstance, being an undocumented student, must turn to private financial assistance in the form of scholarships or grants, which are very limited and scarce. Lately, scholarships had been so hard to attain that I even considered taking a quarter or two off (starting in the Spring) to alleviate my mother, a single parent, of the financial burden. But because of the Frank O'Neill scholarship, I am truly and completely grateful to be given the opportunity to be rewarded $1000 towards my education, giving me greater hope for the future and allowing me to continue following my dreams." |
